What is grant?

The Solar Electricity Grant offers a one-time financial assistance for purchasing and installing solar photovoltaic (PV) panels in residential properties. This grant is overseen by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI). Prior to installing solar panels or commencing any work, applicants must apply for and receive a grant offer from SEAI.

Additionally, businesses and non-domestic buildings, including public facilities, sports clubs, and community organizations, can also avail themselves of grants for solar PV installation through SEAI. For further information on these grants.

Do I qualify for grant?

In order to qualify for a grant, you must:

- Own a home constructed and inhabited before 2021.
- Utilize new materials and products not previously covered by another grant scheme.

- Engage a registered company from the SEAI's registered list of companies. Like Sunvolt.

- Ensure electrical work is carried out by a Safe Electric Ireland electrician.

- Apply to ESB Networks for connection to the electricity distribution system using the ESB Networks NC6 form (PDF), which your registered installer should handle before installation.

- Submit a Declaration of Works signed by a registered installer on the SEAI Solar PV Approved Installer list.

- Conduct a Building Energy Rating (BER) assessment after completion of the work.
- Fulfill the requirements outlined in the Solar PV Code of Practice.

With Sunvolt, you can rest assured that every aspect of your solar PV project is expertly managed.

What to consider before applying
for the solar electricity grant?

Before applying for the grant, there are several factors to take into account, including whether planning permission is required and whether it's advisable to insulate your home beforehand.

Insulating your home prior to installing solar panels is recommended by SEAI, as insulation represents the most straightforward method to reduce energy expenses. SEAI offers various grants to insulate your home and enhance its overall energy efficiency, including:

-Better Energy Homes Scheme
-Better Energy Warmer Homes Scheme
-National Home Energy Upgrade Scheme

Some of these schemes incorporate the Solar Electricity Grant as part of their energy efficiency measures. However, it may be necessary to apply for it separately.

How to apply for the SEAI Solar PV Grant (Ireland)

1) Check you’re eligible (before doing anything else)
  • You must own the home, it must have been built & occupied before 2021, and it must not have previously received an SEAI Solar PV grant.
  • Do not buy materials or start installation until you have your SEAI grant application submitted (and ideally approved).
2) Choose an SEAI-registered Solar PV company and get quotes
  • Pick an SEAI-registered company, shop around, and get a written contract (works, price, timeline, warranties).
3) Create your grant application online
  • Submit your application via SEAI’s online application portal (linked from the SEAI Solar PV grant page).
  • Apply before installation begins.
4) Wait for grant approval
  • After you submit, you’ll receive an approval email/letter. Only then should you proceed with the install.
5) Schedule your post-installation BER assessment (early)
  • You need a post-works BER from an SEAI-registered BER assessor after the installation is completed (assessors can be busy—book ahead).
6) Install the system (and finish within the deadline)
  • Once approved, you have 8 months to complete the works and submit the required documentation.
  • Your installer/company will handle key grid-connection paperwork like the ESB Networks NC6 form.
7) Request payment (your company submits the pack)

SEAI will only pay once the installation is complete and the solar PV company has been paid (or financing is in place). The Solar PV company submits documents including (among others):

  • Declaration of Works
  • Test/commissioning certificate
  • Safe Electric (RECI) certificate
  • NC6
  • Post-works BER
  • Invoice
  • Photos
8) Get paid
  • Once SEAI reviews and approves the submitted documents, the grant is paid to the applicant (for self-managed applications).
Quick “don’t get caught out” checklist
  • Use an SEAI-registered Solar PV company.
  • Apply before you buy materials / start work.
  • Plan for the 8-month completion window after approval.
  • Book the post-works BER assessment early.
