Irish homeowners are set to receive new financial support for home battery storage following the announcement of a €600 SEAI grant for home battery energy storage systems.
The new grant was announced on 29 September 2026 by Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment Darragh O’Brien as part of a wider package of measures aimed at reducing household energy costs, supporting renewable energy and strengthening Ireland’s energy security.
According to the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), the new measures are due to open from 6 October 2026, subject to final implementation arrangements.
One of the most significant measures for homeowners investing in renewable energy is the introduction of a dedicated grant for home battery energy storage systems.
The proposed grant amount is:
€600 for a home battery energy storage system.
SEAI estimates that battery storage could provide household savings of up to €137 per year as a standalone measure. It also states that household savings could be in the region of up to €878 per year where a battery is installed alongside a 4kWp solar PV system, depending on the measure installed and the characteristics of the property.
Actual savings will vary between households, so these figures should be viewed as estimates rather than guaranteed savings.
The €600 battery grant is only one part of the newly announced package.
SEAI has also outlined significantly enhanced support for certain qualifying households.
Under the Warmer Homes Scheme, solar PV systems of up to 4kWp combined with 5kWh battery storage are to be offered as a fully funded measure.
Battery storage gives households greater flexibility in how they use electricity.
A battery can store electricity for use at another time. When combined with solar PV, for example, surplus solar electricity generated during daylight hours can be stored and used later when household demand is higher.
The introduction of dedicated financial support could therefore reduce some of the upfront cost for homeowners considering battery storage.
The announcement is also significant because SEAI's own earlier research noted that there was no dedicated battery storage grant available to Irish homeowners. The newly announced €600 support changes that position.
SEAI states that the newly announced measures will open from 6 October 2026, subject to final implementation arrangements.
Homeowners should note that SEAI has also said that full terms and conditions and detailed eligibility information will be made available in due course.
Anyone considering an installation should therefore check the latest SEAI requirements before purchasing equipment or starting work.
The introduction of a dedicated €600 home battery grant marks an important development for households interested in generating, storing and managing more of their own electricity.
For homeowners already considering solar PV, the announcement also creates another reason to look at solar generation and battery storage as part of the same overall energy solution.
At Sunvolt, we welcome measures that make clean, renewable energy more accessible to Irish households. Our focus remains on helping customers understand their options clearly and choose a solar and storage system suited to their actual energy requirements.
